Kaavalan (lit. Bodyguard) is a 2011 Indian Tamil-language romanticactioncomedy film written and directed by Siddique, starring Vijay, Asin and Mithra Kurian in the lead roles. The film is a remake of Siddique's previous Malayalam filmBodyguard. It features Rajkiran, Roja and Vadivelu in supporting roles with musical score composed by Vidyasagar. The film's principal shoot commenced in April 2010[1][2][3] and it was completed by November 2010. The film was selected to be screened at the Shanghai International Film Festival.[4][5] The story revolves around a girl named Meera who has a secret romantic interest in her bodyguard.
Plot[edit]
Bhoominathan idolises Muthuramalingam, a rich powerful landlord, and at the request of his parents, he accepts to work for Muthuramalingam as his bodyguard. There enters Muthuramalingam's rival, who has lost his daughter since she committed suicide, the reason being rejection by Muthuramalingam's son. While Bhoomi protects Muthuramalingam, his rival threatens the life of his daughter Meera.
Bhoomi is sent to college along with Meera and her friend Madhu to protect them from the threat. Bhoomi joins the same class where Meera studies, as he has previously discontinued his education. Meera does not like Bhoomi following her as a bodyguard, and therefore plans to divert him. Meera calls Bhoomi over his mobile phone from a private number and introduces herself as 'Ammukutty'. Initially, Bhoomi hates the mobile call as it will disturb him but later on develops a liking towards Ammukutty and slowly love blossoms for Bhoomi without knowing that it is Meera herself.
At one point, Meera too feels herself becoming attracted to Bhoomi and expresses her desire to meet him in person without revealing her identity. However, due to circumstances they are not able to accomplish this, and she decides to elope with Bhoomi for which he agrees, unaware it is Meera. However through certain means, Muthuramalingam gets to know that Bhoomi and Meera are going to run away and sends his men to stop Bhoomi. Meera overhears her father's plans and decides to save Bhoomi by lying that he is in love with some other girl and has planned to elope with her. Muthuramalingam spares Bhoomi, believing that Meera is not his lover, but sends his men to the railway station to find out Bhoomi's lover. He also instructs that Bhoomi should be killed if there is no one in the railway station.
Meera, in a desperate attempt to save Bhoomi, comes up with a plan. She requests Madhu to go to the railway station and pretend to be Ammukutty, so that Muthuramalingam's men will spare Bhoomi believing Madhu to be his lover. Meera also gives a mobile phone to Madhu and informs to give it to Bhoomi when she meets him (as Bhoomi's phone is broken) so that she can reveal the truth to Bhoomi. Madhu agrees and leaves to the station. Over there, Bhoomi gets surprised seeing Madhu in the station and believes that it is Madhu who was pretending as Ammukutty so far and hugs her. Muthuramalingam's men see this and leave the place, believing that Meera is not Bhoomi's lover.
Suddenly, Madhu gets a call in the mobile given by Meera. Madhu understands that the call is from Meera and she wants to speak to Bhoomi. To everyone's surprise, Madhu throws away the phone from train, following which it is revealed that Madhu also likes Bhoomi, and she decides to marry him by betraying Meera. Meera understands that Madhu has played a trick.
Several years later, Bhoomi, now a top-ranking government official, now returns to Muthuramalingam's village to visit him along with his son Sidharth. Muthuramalingam's condition is ill. It is revealed that Madhu has died a few years back due to some medical ailments, but she has written all the truth in a diary and gives it to Sidharth to read it after her death. Sidharth has learnt all the truth. Madhu has also mentioned in the diary that this truth should never be disclosed to Bhoomi.
Meera stays with her father, and Bhoomi gets shocked to know that Meera still remains unmarried. When Bhoomi and Sidharth are about to return home, Sidharth asks Meera to come with them and expresses his wish to call her as mother. Bhoomi berates Sidharth for his suggestion and apologises to Meera and Muthuramalingam, but Muthuramalingam also insists Meera to go with Bhoomi.
Now Bhoomi, Meera and Sidharth leave together from the village. Just the before the train starts, Sidharth runs out to throw the diary containing the truth in a dust bin and comes back, but Bhoomi takes back the diary from the dust bin without Sidharth's knowledge and reads it. Upon reading the diary, Bhoomi is shocked knowing that it was Meera who loved him in the name of Ammukutty. In the end, Bhoomi also whole heartedly accepts Meera.

Production[edit]Development[edit]
Siddique first narrated the script of Bodyguard to Vijay. As Vijay had prior commitments then, he suggested making this movie first in Malayalam as Bodyguard. He later announced his decision to remake the film with enhancements in the script to better suit the Tamil audience.[citation needed] The film was initially referred to as Kaavalkaaran, which literally means 'bodyguard' in Tamil. After rumours of the title being changed to Kaaval Kaadhal, the film was officially confirmed to be titled Kaavalan in August 2010.[6] The reason for the name confusion and its eventual permanent change was due to complications in obtaining the rights to the title of Kavalkaran from M. G. Ramachandran's producers. They refused to sell the title to Vijay, leading to the rechristening of the title to Kaavalan.[7]
Casting[edit]
With the announcement of the remake, Siddique had finalised Vijay to play the lead role, reminiscent of their previous venture Friends (2001), which was also a remake of Siddique's own Malayalam film. Asin Thottumkal was signed up to pair with Vijay for the third time after their previous pairings in Sivakasi (2005) and Pokkiri (2007), also giving Asin a comeback in Tamil cinema after her last appearance in Dasavathaaram (2008). Vadivelu, Rajkiran, and Roja Selvamani were also signed up as supporting characters.
Filming[edit]
The film's principal shoot began in April at Kumbakonam.[8]
An incident occurred on set in April, where Asin, her father, and her makeup assistants fainted in their caravan after being exposed to a gas leak. They were treated in hospital the same day and were eventually discharged.[9][10]
The second shoot schedule occurred in Vellore. Vijay and Asin, along with director Siddique and the rest of crew filmed at the Vellore Institute of Technology. A song was shot at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Release[edit]
The film was selected at the 14th Shanghai International Film Festival in the panorama section. SIFF issued an invitation to Vijay as guest of honour.[4]
The film was later dubbed in Hindi as Main Hoon Bodyguard.[11]
Critical response[edit]
Sify.com described the film as 'super fun' and a 'perfect Pongal family entertainer' and rated it 4.5/5. The reviewer particularly praised Vijay's performance, observing that the film works 'purely on his star charisma and larger-than-life image' and that 'he carries the film on his shoulders and is one good reason to watch the film'.[12] A critic from Rediff.com, while giving the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, credited Vijay for 'shedding his action/political persona' and 'choosing a script that focuses on comedy and emotions'.[13] Behindwoods.com rated the film 4 out of 5 stars and called it 'a relatable love story shot in a cute and simple manner, rich with emotions, and a smooth narration'. The reporter noted good chemistry between Vijay and Asin. Asin's performance was described as convincing.[14]Oneindia commented, 'Vijay's performance as extraordinary and describing Kaavalan is a family entertainer with an extraordinary script'.[15]
Box office[edit]
Kaavalan released in 350 screens.[16] Kaavalan released to generally positive reviews from critics.[17][18] The film collected ₹55 lakh in Chennai at its opening weekend.[19] By the end of six weeks it had grossed around ₹3.36 crore (US$470,000) at the Chennai box office.[20] The film grossed US$79,185 in the United Kingdom[21] and completed a 100-day theatrical run.[5]

(Redirected from Kadhal Kondein)
Kaadhal Kondein (English: I fell in love) is a 2003 Indian Tamil-language romanticpsychological thriller film inspired from Fear, a 1996 American psychological thriller directed by James Foley, written and directed by Selvaraghavan, starring his brother Dhanush and newcomer Sonia Agarwal in lead roles, whilst newcomers Sudeep Sarangi, Nagesh and Daniel Balaji play supporting roles. The film, which has music scored by noted musician Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematography handled by Arvind Krishna, released on 4 July 2003, winning critical acclaim and becoming a commercial success upon release, and is considered as the breakthrough film of Dhanush that catapulted him into the main foray of lead actors in the Tamil film industry.
The film was later remade in Telugu in 2004 as Nenu, in Kannada in 2009 as Ravana, in Indian Bengali in 2010 as Amanush, and in Bangladeshi Bengali in 2004 as Onno Manush.
The story explores the mind of a youth who is mentally and physically abused in his childhood. The lack of a mother's love haunts the protagonist throughout the film as the girl of his infatuation is killed. Becoming a psychopath, he desperately tries to woo his newly found lady love and his efforts culminate in a superb nail-biting cliffhanger.
Plot[edit]
Vinod (Dhanush), who has grown up under the care of a church father Rozario (Nagesh), is an introvert but a genius. He is forcibly sent to college by Rozario but is a complete misfit in class. Though shunned by the rest of his class, Divya (Sonia Agarwal) becomes his friend, and he gradually warms up to her. His feelings soon turn into love, but he realizes that Divya considers him as only a friend and learns that she is in love with another classmate, Aadhi (Sudeep Sarangi).
Divya's father is enraged on knowing about her love. He locks her up and prevents her from contacting anyone. Vinod comes and requests to meet her on the pretext of getting some old clothes for himself to wear. Pitying Vinod, her father allows him to meet Divya. Vinod escapes with Divya and convinces her that she will meet Aadhi at Ooty. Vinod has set up a secret place in Ooty for executing his plan of wooing Divya. He makes her stay with him, while convincing her by talking about Aadhi's arrival. On one such day, he reveals his miserable past, when he was made to work for paid labour after being orphaned at an early age. He revolts against the oppression one day. Promptly, he is beaten black and blue for his profanity. Moreover, he also loses his girlfriend to rapists in that place, who also kill her. After some days he kills the woman running the orphanage and also kills the rapist, helped by other children. They manage to break the place, escape from there, and seek refuge in the place of Rozario.
Divya is touched by his past. Incidentally, the police and Aadhi arrive at the place. While Vinod was away to get some food, they try to explain to Divya that Vinod is a psychopath. Divya scoffs at their claims, citing his gentlemanly behaviour over the days that she has been alone with him. Vinod, learning that the police have arrived at the scene, begins to indulge in violence. He opens fire, killing a police constable. Forcing them out of their hideout, he manages to evade the police inspector and Aadhi and successfully brings Divya back to their original place of stay. Divya soon identifies the tiger in the cow's skin. Vinod pleads with her, telling Divya that all he wanted in his life was her presence, but she called him a friend and stated her inability to accept him as her partner for life.
Meanwhile, Aadhi regains consciousness and comes back to attack Vinod and rescue his girlfriend. A violent fight follows, where Vinod defies his puny self and treats Aadhi with disdain. The fight culminates with Vinod, Aadhi, and Divya teetering at the edge of a slippery cliff. While Divya clutches a tree bark tightly, Vinod and Aadhi slip out and barely manage to hold either of her hands. Divya is forced to choose between her boyfriend and friend. Aadhi's pleas notwithstanding, Divya does not have the heart to kill Vinod, who smiles wryly at Divya and lets go of her hands himself, falling to his death in the abyss.

Production[edit]
Following the success of the previous film Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002), the team chose to collaborate again with the psychotic romantic thriller Kaadhal Kondein, credited as Selvaraghavan's first film. The venture, produced by his home production, also marked the first collaboration of Selvaraghavan with cinematographer Arvind Krishna, whom he would later associate with newcomer Sonia Agarwal. Selvaraghavan had written the script for the film in the late 1990s and had first narrated the story to Dhanush in their shared bedroom at home, before asking him to play the lead role of Vinod.[1]
Soundtrack[edit]
For Kaadhal Kondein, director Selvaraghavan and music composer Yuvan Shankar Raja came together again after their earlier successful collaboration in Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002), for which Selvaraghavan worked as a writer. The soundtrack of Kaadhal Kondein released on 20 March 2003, featuring seven tracks with lyrics written by Pazhani Bharathi and Na. Muthukumar. The music, especially the film score, received universal critical acclaim, establishing composer Yuvan Shankar Raja as one of the 'most sought after music directors' in the Tamil film industry.[2]
![]()
More than one year after the release of the film, an 'original soundtrack' was released, that followed the Hollywood-style. It was said to be the first time, that an original soundtrack was released for a film in India as the soundtracks released in India do not contain any film score pieces but full songs that feature in the film itself.[2] The OST of Kaadhal Kondein contains 20 tracks overall, which includes the seven earlier released tracks, four 'montage' bit songs, that featured in the film, but not in the soundtrack, and nine pieces from the actual film score, which were titled as 'Theme Music'.
All music is composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Release[edit]
The film opened in July 2003 to critical acclaim and commercial success.[3] A reviewer from The Hindu noted, 'his story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are focussed and hit the bull's eye straightway — hardly missing the mark.'[4]
Awards[edit]
Remakes[edit]
Since its release, the film has been remade into several Indian languages; Boney Kapoor bought the rights to remake the film in Hindi, but the project did not materialise.[5] The film was later remade in Telugu as Nenu (2004),[6] in Kannada as Ravana (2009),[7] in Indian Bengali as Amanush (2010),[8] and in Bangladeshi Bengali as Onno Manush (2004).[9]
Legacy[edit]
The film provided career breakthroughs for both Selvaraghavan and Dhanush in the Tamil film industry.[10][11] The success of the song 'Devathaiyai Kandaen' prompted Boopathy Pandian to name his 2005 film starring Dhanush after the song title.
